WEST SYSTEM 423 Fiberglass & Repair

Graphite Powder

423 Graphite Powder is a very fine black powder designed to be mixed with WEST SYSTEM epoxy to create specialized low-friction, durable coating surfaces for marine applications. This 12 oz container provides ample material for multiple coating projects requiring enhanced performance characteristics.

Low-Friction Performance:

When mixed with epoxy, graphite powder produces a low-friction exterior coating surface that's ideal for rudders, centerboards, and racing craft bottoms that are dry-sailed. The graphite-enhanced coating reduces drag and improves performance, making it a favorite among competitive sailors and performance-oriented boaters.

Enhanced Durability and Scuff Resistance:

Beyond reducing friction, graphite powder significantly increases the epoxy's scuff resistance and overall durability. The graphite-reinforced coating creates a mar-resistant surface that withstands the wear and tear of launching, beaching, and general use without showing damage as readily as unmodified epoxy.

Teak Deck Caulking Simulation:

A popular application for graphite-modified epoxy is in teak deck construction, where the black mixture simulates traditional caulking between teak planks. This not only provides an authentic appearance but also protects the underlying resin from sunlight degradation while creating durable, waterproof seams.

Easy to Use:

Add up to 10% by volume (approximately 1 oz of graphite powder per 8 fl oz of mixed epoxy) to achieve the desired properties. The fine powder disperses easily into mixed epoxy, creating a smooth, uniform black coating.

Key Benefits:

  • Low Friction: Reduces drag on underwater surfaces
  • Increased Scuff Resistance: Creates more durable, mar-resistant coating
  • Enhanced Durability: Withstands launching, beaching, and general wear
  • UV Protection: Black color helps protect resin from sunlight
  • Authentic Appearance: Simulates traditional teak deck caulking
  • Easy Mixing: Fine powder disperses smoothly into epoxy

Common Applications:

  • Coating rudders and centerboards for reduced friction
  • Racing craft bottoms (dry-sailed boats)
  • Simulating caulking in teak deck construction
  • Creating mar-resistant coating surfaces
  • Protecting epoxy from UV degradation
  • Any application requiring low-friction, durable coating

Important Note:

Graphite powder is not an antifoulant and will not prevent marine growth. It's designed for performance enhancement and durability on dry-sailed craft or above-waterline applications.

Mixing Guidelines:

  • Addition Rate: Up to 10% by volume
  • Approximate Measure: 1 oz graphite per 8 fl oz mixed epoxy
  • Result: Smooth, black, low-friction coating

This 12 oz container provides sufficient graphite powder for creating professional-quality low-friction coatings and simulated teak caulking on medium-sized projects.
