This ignition kit is designed for OMC V8 engines rated 185-350 HP using a Mallory conventional ignition system. It also fits MerCruiser and Pleasurecraft engines equipped with a Mallory 8-cylinder tall cap distributor. The kit includes three components: a contact set, a condenser, and a rotor.
The contact set and condenser work together at the distributor points. As the points open, the condenser absorbs the voltage spike to prevent arcing, which protects the points from premature wear and keeps the ignition firing cleanly. The rotor directs the high-voltage spark to the correct cylinder in sequence. When any one of these three parts starts to fail, you typically see hard starts, rough running, or misfires. Replacing all three at once is the right call since they wear together.
