The base is the foundation of the water pump assembly, bolting to the gear housing and providing the sealing surface and mounting platform for the pump components above it. A cracked or warped base is a reliable source of cooling water leaks at the lower unit, and it's a part worth inspecting any time the pump is apart. If you're doing a water pump rebuild on one of these V6 engines and the base shows cracks, erosion, or a damaged sealing surface, this is the replacement to reach for.
