EMP 89-00890 Starter Solenoid The starter solenoid is the electrical switch that connects the battery to the starter motor when you turn the key. It is a simple component with a straightforward job, but when it fails, the engine is not going anywhere. A bad solenoid typically presents as a click with no crank, no response at all when the key is turned, or intermittent starting that gets progressively worse over time. On an outboard that has been sitting through a wet season or exposed to salt air, solenoid failure is one of the more common electrical gremlins you will encounter. The EMP 89-00890 Solenoid covers two distinct application families. On the Mercury and Mariner side, it fits 1973 to 1977 2-cylinder 20 horsepower outboards, replacing Mercury part numbers 47886T and 47886. On the Johnson and Evinrude side, the fitment range is considerably broader, covering 1965 to 2006 outboards across 2-cylinder engines from 20 to 60 horsepower, 3-cylinder engines from 70 to 75 horsepower, V4 engines from 85 to 140 horsepower, V6 engines from 150 to 250 horsepower, and V8 engines from 250 to 300 horsepower.
