EMP 26-03807 Seals The upper gearcase seals on a MerCruiser Alpha Gen II are the barrier between the water outside and the gear lube inside. They surround the drive shaft where it passes through the upper gearcase housing, and when they wear out or take on damage, water finds its way into the gear lube and gear lube finds its way out. Milky gear lube at your next service interval is one of the more reliable signs that these seals have given up, and at that point the gearcase internals have already been running in a compromised lubricant. Catching and replacing worn seals before that happens is the smarter play by a wide margin.
