The EMP 22-05305 is a male hose barb fitting with a 1/4" NPT threaded end on one side and a 3/8" hose barb on the other. It is a direct replacement for Johnson/Evinrude part 0173312 and fits universal applications where this thread-to-barb transition is needed in a fuel or water system.
The 1/4" NPT thread is a tapered pipe thread, which means it seals on the threads themselves rather than relying on a gasket or O-ring. Use thread sealant tape or a marine-grade pipe thread compound on the NPT end during installation to ensure a leak-free connection. The 3/8" barb end accepts standard 3/8" I.D. hose and should be secured with an appropriate hose clamp.
