The EMP 27-02961 is a head gasket for Johnson and Evinrude 2-cylinder outboards in the 5 to 6 horsepower range, covering model years 1965 to 1979. The head gasket seals the cylinder head to the engine block, containing combustion pressure and preventing coolant or oil from entering the combustion chamber. On a small outboard in this class, head gasket failure typically presents as loss of compression, overheating, white exhaust smoke, or coolant loss without an obvious external leak.
