The lower unit is the bottom-most component of an outboard motor, which means it spends most of its time immersed in very corrosive saltwater settings. It is comprised of an aluminum alloy designed to boost corrosion resistance, strength, and rigidity to withstand collisions with items such as driftwood. Its undercut form is made feasible by the usage of a side core. Shifting problems caused by broken outboard lower units have various indications including water in the gear lubricant, metallic particles on the drain screw magnet, clunking sounds while changing, or the inability to shift gears.
