This kit includes the expansion tank and associated components needed to properly manage coolant overflow in a closed cooling system, keeping the cooling circuit sealed, pressurized, and functioning the way Mercury designed it. Closed cooling systems on MerCruiser engines use a freshwater circuit to cool the engine block, with raw water handling only the heat exchanger side. The coolant overflow recovery tank is a critical part of that closed loop. As coolant heats up and expands, it moves into the overflow tank rather than being lost overboard. When the engine cools back down, the system draws that coolant back in. A cracked, missing, or failed overflow tank breaks that cycle and can lead to low coolant levels, overheating, and air pockets in the cooling system.
