AIS – an acronym for Automatic Identification System have been legally required for larger vessels allowing vessels to see each other via a radar type of plotting on their chart plotters. With an AIS receiver and their existing plotter, along with the correct antenna they are set. Set up as Class A (commercial vessels) and Class B (smaller vessels) they function similarly but differ by the signals sent (every 2 seconds for Class A and every 30 seconds for Class B).

Radar – another acronym – Radio Detection and Ranging, uses electromagnetic waves in identifying range, altitude, direction or speed of both moving and fixed objects.
